On April 1, 2026, Mississauga joined Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Kitchener in adopting a municipal renoviction by-law. Mississauga’s Rental Repairs and Renovations Licensing By-law will come into effect on September 1, 2026.
The by-law is designed to strengthen protections for renters by addressing renovictions, in which landlords improperly evict tenants under the pretext of major renovations or repairs without following the legal process. These unlawful evictions can displace residents, increase housing insecurity, and reduce the supply of rental housing units.
In addition to complying with the provincial N13 eviction process, landlords in Mississauga will be required to:
- Apply for a Rental Repairs and Renovations Licence from the City within seven days of serving an N13 notice.
- Notify tenants that a licence application has been submitted and provide information about their rights under the by-law.
- Compensate and accommodate affected tenants, including making a mandatory one-time moving contribution payment.
For more information about the Rental Repairs and Renovations Licensing By-law, including licensing requirements, fees, timelines, and penalties, visit the City of Mississauga’s webpage.
TRREB will continue to monitor the development of renoviction by-laws across the Greater Toronto Area and Simcoe County and keep Members updated.
